Prof Hakim qualified in medicine in 1984. Having gained his FRCS, he then completed the Gastrointestinal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. In 1992 he completed his Specialist Training in General Surgery. He gained the American Surgical Fellowship in 1998. Prof Hakim currently holds the post of Consultant General and Transplant Surgeon, Surgical Director of Transplant Unit within the NHS. He is currently President of the International College of Surgeons and their representative to the World Health Organisation.
